White Sage Smudge

Also known as Sacred Sage, Bee Sage or California Sage, White Sage smudges are the most widely used smudging sticks. Many people regard this as the ‘Holy Grail’ of smudging and won’t consider any other herb stick. White Sage smudges give out a sweet, herbaceous and slightly astringent aroma when burned. Very versatile and hugely effective, these smudges are used for a variety of purposes including meditation, protection, cleansing and purifying the body, warding off evil spirits, and fending off infections.

Cedar Smudge

An ancient tree and one of the oldest thriving beings on Earth, Cedar recalls ancient forests and invokes their wisdom and protection. The fresh, woodsy smell of a burning Cedar smudge works wonderfully to cleanse a new home of its old energies and unwanted spirits while inviting fresh, energetic vibes and protecting the new occupant from undesirable influences.   

Palo Santo Smudge

Palo Santo or ‘Holy Wood’ has a smooth, aromatic and spicy scent that is faintly reminiscent of ginger bread. Its holy reputation dates back to the Incas who burned it as part of their healing and cleansing ceremonies. Burning a Palo Santo smudge can help clear out negative energies, instill calm and relaxation, and fill your home with joy and harmony. The Spaniards often burn Palo Santo smudges on Catholic holy days and processions.  

Mugwort Smudge 

Mugwort is a common name for several species of Artemisia plants.It brings clarity and develops/deepens psychic abilities. It is also known as “dream weed” for its unique ability to stimulate dreams. It is renowned as a smudging herb for its subtle, sweet scent and dream-inducing qualities. It has a long history of use in the Pagan tradition and is still used in modern-day Pagan magical practices as incense and for smudging or spell work. 

Eucalyptus Smudge 

Eucalyptus leaves are commonly used in purification magic. They can be burned to represent air, and cleanse a person, place or space. They are a great alternative to white sage. The leaves are also greatly useful in healing. When dried they’re used in healing poppets, pillows or sachets to attract healthy vibes. Eucalyptus leaves are also commonly used in protection magic. It can be burned during cleansing or added to healing spells, but dried leaves can be added to wards to keep unwanted influences at bay. It can also be used for bringing joy, helping to overcome blockages, and reconciling difficulties in relationships.

Sweetgrass Smudge 

Sweetgrass has been used by the Native Americans as a ceremonial plant and for some medicinal purposes. Generally, it is used as an incense or during smudging rituals to invite positivity, happiness, peace, and harmony, and healing into an environment or person. Because of its resemblance to hair, it is nicknamed the “Hair of Mother Earth” and is often seen braided, with each strand representing love, peace, and harmony or the mind, body, and spirit (as taught by the Cree-Ojibway tribe). Beyond joy, sweetgrass also promotes open-heartedness, strength, and connection with the spiritual realm/our Creator. It is used to purify objects, auras, and sacred spaces, and when hung in the home or around your neck, it can provide protection to your spirit. Some people steep sweetgrass into a tea to alleviate arthritis, coughs, and encourage blood-thinning.
